  1. If you are visiting my hometown of St Petersburg you have to visit Ft Desoto Park and put your toes in the sand. It is arguably one of the best beaches in the nation and definately worth the brief 10 minute detour off the highway to see some natural Florida beauty of St Petersburg Clearwater.

  2. Wow. This article does not contain any of the great things about St. Pete! In fact, most of the places mentioned aren’t even in St. Pete at all! True, a lot of the appeal is how close it is Tampa, but it can hold it’s own quite well!

If you are trying to decide whether to stay on I-75 or take the I-275 detour, the detour is definitely worth it. Even if you don’t get out of the car, crossing the Sunshine Skyway Bridge is one of the coolest views you will find.

For “Places to Go” check out the Chihuly exhibit, new Dali museum, Ft. DeSoto park and beach, any of the beaches on the West coast, the Pier (for as long as it is stil there), Beach Drive (for shops and restaurants), Tropicana Field (catch a Rays game), Al Lang field for some soccer, and some of the best parks and nature preserves out there.

If you can spend a bit, the best places to stay are the Vinoy, the Don Cesar, the Sirata, or the Tradewinds.

And if you go to this area, you have to try the Cuban food like La Teresita, la Habana Cafe, and the Columbia. Other good places include Moon Under Water, Red Mesa, Parkshore Grill, Ceviche, Old Northeast Tavern, Bella Brava, and Taco Bus (a local favorite). For a cool restaurant (especially with kids) is the Hangar Restaurant, right on the strip of a small airport in downtown. And, of course, there is Ferg’s Sports Bar (a destination in itself, right across from Tropicana Field).
